Finding refuge in the haven of empathy

Integrated Empathy & “Warm Data” vs. Artificial Intelligence

Empathy as a key to the problems of the 21st century

One important question that has been on my mind since the rise of AI and chatbots is: how will we even be able to tell the creations of artificial intelligence apart from truth and authenticity in the future?
Besides a trained capacity for empathy, one of my answers lies in “contextualised knowledge” – something only the human mind can add to a situation and that cannot be turned into an algorithm: so-called “warm data”. In other words: relational information.

“Warm data”, a term coined by Nora Bateson in 2012, refers to information about the interrelationships that connect the elements of a complex system and make it truly alive. Sounds abstract? In reality, it isn’t.
To put it another way: “warm data” is the information that flows between the parts of a complex system so that we can perceive it as “alive” at all – for example the interrelationships between the members of a family, the organisms in the oceans, the departments of an organisation, or even the parts of our personality. To understand these systems, it is not enough to understand the individual family members, organisms, departments or parts of the personality; we have to understand the mutual relationships between them. Only then is there aliveness, warmth of heart and genuine interaction (as opposed to transaction).

Poem of the Month

In these heavy times,
your Flowing-Cloud-Self
asks you to remember:

There is no weight
that can weigh you down.

In these time
of cutting and scarring,
slicing and scoring,
your Great-Ocean-of-Being-Self
asks you to remember:

There is no blemish or mark
being held against you.

In this time of chaos and upheaval,
uncertainty and change,
your luminous, light-as-a-feather
Heron-of-New-Horizons-Self says:

Rest assured
in your new
flightpath coordinates.

The vast sky swelled larger tonight
and willingly holds
all that you are and will be.

Forget the ‘love-naysayers’;
they’re just afraid
somehow
they won’t "make it to Heaven."

They don’t realize
they’re already woven-in
already woven-in
by their own star-marked cells
simply from Being Here.

They don’t realize
they’re already woven-in
already woven-in
by an invisible love
they simply haven’t
come to know yet.

You’re already woven-in.
You’re already woven-in.
